Willie McCovey
Next Wednesday (July 2nd) will be the 40th anniversary of Willie McCovey
superceding a public birthday greeting for me.
As a continuation of celebrating my birthday in 1972, a few of us went to
Candlestick to see the Giants/Dodgers game.
While Willie McCovey was at bat in the 7th inning, the scoreboard in left field
went blank for a split second.
When it came back on it said:
Happy Birthday
Gary Tashman
Giants Fan From LA
(I lived in LA for one year!)
We all got up and cheered.
I fumbled for my camera to get a record of this day.
Then Mac hit one over the left field fence for his 14th Grand Slam.
It tied him with Gil Hodges and Hank Aaron with the most ever by a National Leaguer.
They displayed his feat on the scoreboard, replacing my greeting.
I don't have a record of the scoreboard greeting.
But I do have a great memory.
And the best of all ...
Big Mac hit a grand slam against the Dodgers.
So this year I had another public expression of my birthday.
Facebook!
I am touched by the number of best wishes.
I will respond to each of you individually as I have the time and the muse to write a thank you.
In the meantime...
The Giants just swept the Dodgers during my birthday week!
